RECOIL
Recoil explores the complexity of gun ownership through the real first-person experiences of young people. In April, 2018, thirteen college students with wide-ranging opinions about guns met to share their personal stories with each other. Pittsburgh-based students and artists worked closely with recent graduates of Woodland Hills High School, where seven students have been shot since September alone. The resulting collaboration blended story, song, and movement to interrogate the polarizing atmosphere of gun culture in America. What does it mean to hold a gun, to fire one, to face one? What is it like to witness a mass shooting, to be on lockdown? How have tragedies such as Sandy Hook transformed our lives? These questions are at the heart of RECOIL. The show has since performed at the University of Pittsburgh and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.
